Dan Evans becomes new British No.1

Dan Evans has become Britain's new male No.1 for the first time in his career following Monday's latest rankings run.

As world No.43 he is just two spots below the career-high he achieved in March 2017 that came after his best run at a Grand Slam as he reached the fourth round of the Australian Open.

Evans is the just the third British man since the summer of 2006 to hold the top spot after Andy Murray (February 2006 - March 2018) and Kyle Edmund (March 2018 - October 2019). He is also the 13th man since the ATP rankings were introduced in 1973 to achieve the feat.

It’s a real honour to head the British men’s ranking list for the first time in my career

Speaking about the milestone, Dan said: "It’s a real honour to head the British men’s ranking list for the first time in my career, especially when you look at who has been there and how few players have achieved it.  I’m very proud of the improvements I have made in my game over the last 12 months and look forward to what comes next."

Dan's new No.1 status comes after an extremely solid season, which has seen him lift two ATP Challenger trophies (Surbiton and Nottingham), reach the third round of two Grand Slams (Wimbledon and US Open), make the final of an ATP Tour event (Delray Beach) and clinch two other ATP Tour quarter-final spots (Eastbourne and Atlanta). Starting the season as the world No.190, he's risen up 147 spots, showcasing some serious shotmaking along the way...

His style has also been likened to 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer's - and by the man himself. After defeating Evans 7-6(5), 7-6(3), 6-3 in the second round of the 2019 Australian Open, Federer was full of praise for his British opponent, saying it was like 'playing in the mirror a little bit'.
