Tennis Wales Local Lockdown Membership

To ensure the tennis community can still play where they are subject to local lockdown restrictions which stop them playing at the venue or club they are currently a member of in another local authority.

The reciprocal membership arrangement will enable you to book a court at a registered LTA venue (where they have capacity), in the local authority that you live whilst you are restricted on non-essential travel to your normal club/venue in a neighboring authority. This scheme is not a transfer of your membership rights; it simply provides an opportunity to book a court at another local venue/club to keep playing during local lockdown.

The sole intention of the scheme is to enable as many people as possible to continue to enjoy the benefits of regular tennis participation. We know playing tennis has tremendous benefit to mental and physical wellbeing; we want to protect that at a challenging time for all of us.

We request clubs/venues and players wishing to be part of the scheme uphold the spirit of which it is intended.

If you would like your registered venue to join the scheme please e-mail with details of your venue contact point including name, e-mail address and contact phone number. This information will be published on our website for players to find a temporary local venue to play.

Tennis Wales proposes an initial period of time for the scheme to operate until 31st December 2020. This window can be extended to compliment further lockdown restrictions into 2021 or ended if restrictions are lifted before the current end date.

This scheme doesn’t prohibit individual clubs/venues making their own arrangement separate to this scheme with neighboring clubs or extending the arrangement after Tennis Wales ends the scheme. It may be beneficial for venues to contact neighboring venues to make some simple arrangements and shared understanding of promotion.

People are also free to pay for additional or enhanced services (short term membership offers, coaching sessions etc.) direct with the local venue.

For this process to be successful it is required to be as simple as possible to administer:

  1. Venues wishing to be part of the scheme provide Tennis Wales with a single contact point (name, e-mail and phone number). Venues must be LTA registered to be part of the scheme.
  2. Tennis Wales will maintain an up to date list of venues participating on our website for players to search for local opportunities to play. It may be beneficial for venues to contact neighboring venues to make some simple arrangements and shared understanding of promotion.
  3. The player contacts the local venue they wish play at expressing their interest to join (your normal venue must be part of the scheme for you to be able to request to play at a local venue – it is a reciprocal scheme).
  4. The admin contact at the local venue checks that the potential temporary member has a valid membership with their normal venue – this membership must be maintained until 31st December 2020.
  5. On confirmation, the local venue provides the new temporary member with guidance on booking information and any access requirements to access tennis activities and book a court. A free temporary membership until 31st December can be created on ClubSpark and a private invite provided via e-mail for the potential temporary member.
  6. Temporary members must provide their local venue with only essential personal information required to ensure safe and efficient operation of the venue and to support processes such as safeguarding and test, trace, protect can be operated as required.
  7. We request the temporary local venue to gather only the minimum, essential information required from the temporary member to safely and efficiently operate your venue.
  8. We request that the temporary membership status gives the player fair access to:
    • Book a tennis court for recreational play (they must adhere to your visitor/guest booking processes for any other people they wish to play with who are not members at your venue);
    • Access to your club house facilities for essential activities only (toilets and changing where available and open). Our guidance remains that minimum time should be spent on site and players arrive ready to play and shower at home.
  9. Players are reminded that they must only attempt to play tennis at a venue in their local authority area if they are subject to local lockdown restrictions at their home address. Tennis Wales views no travel for tennis participation as essential travel.
  10. Participation at any venue should be in line with the latest ‘Return to Play Guidance’ in Wales which can be found here .
