Murray and Lumsden bag titles over successful doubles weekend for Scots

• 3 MINUTE READ

A strong week on the doubles court for Scots as Jamie Murray and Maia Lumsden clinched ATP and WTA tour titles respectively while Gordon Reid began his Wheelchair Masters campaign.

Jamie Murray captured his third title of the year and second of the season with partner John Peers at the Belgrade Open ATP 250.

Murray and Peers have picked up momentum on the Tour recently, having won the Basel ATP 500 a couple of weeks ago as well as a deep run in Beijing last month.

The pair opened their account as the top seeds in Belgrade with a win over Aussie duo James Duckworth and Christopher O’Connell 7-6 6-1.

Murray and Peers followed their first-round win with a dominant performance over Andre Goransson and Sem Verbeek 6-2 6-1 to reach the semi-finals.

The Aussie-Scot duo then dispatched Nicolas Barrientos of Colombia and David Pel of the Netherlands 6-2 6-4 to book their place in the final.

In the final, Murray and Peers faced fourth seeds Skander Mansouri and Ivan Dodig. The championship match went the distance with Mansouri and Dodig taking the opening set 6-3 before Murray and Peers bounced back to take the second 7-6(5) and force a match tie-break.

There was little between the teams before Mansouri and Dodig earned a match point at 9-8. Murray and Peers found a way through, though, and secured the match – along with the title - 11-9.

Lumsden and Appleton capture Dow Tennis Classic

Maia Lumsden and fellow Brit Emily Appleton teamed up for the first time to win the Dow Tennis Classic WTA 125 in Michigan.

Lumsden and Appleton entered as the second seeds and picked up an opening-round win over Switzerland’s Leonie Kung and Australia’s Alexandra Osborne 6-2 6-4.

In the quarter-finals, the Brits defeated Americans Sophie Chang and Rasheeda McAdoo 6-4 6-4 to move through to the semi-finals.

In the final four, Lumsden and Appleton played third seeds Hailey Baptiste and Whitney Osuigwe of the US. A tight first set saw Maia and Emily prevail in a tie-break before running away with the second set to secure their place in the final 7-6(7) 6-2.

Arian Arsenault and Mia Kupres of Canada had made their way through the other half of the draw, but Lumsden and Appleton struck first in the final, taking the first set 6-2 before the Canadians bounced back to win the second 6-4.

A match tie-break decided who would take home the title and it was the Brits who pulled through 10-5 to lift the trophy.

The title was a maiden win on the WTA Tour for Emily and Maia’s second WTA 125 title.

Gordon Reid begins Wheelchair Masters campaign

Gordon Reid opened his singles campaign on Monday at the 2024 ITF Wheelchair Masters Finals in Arnhem, Netherlands.
