Learning from the Pros: Luay’s Coaching Chat with Jacob Fearnley
• 3 MINUTE READ
At just 19 years old, Luay is already making his mark in the world of tennis coaching—a journey that began back in 2018 when he first picked up a racket during a school-based session run by Get Set 4 Tennis (GS4T).
Supported by a grant from LTA Tennis Foundation, GS4T’s inclusive approach gave Luay, who is autistic and has a developmental coordination disorder, the opportunity to thrive in a sport he quickly grew to love. Over the years, he progressed through the full GS4T pathway—from participant to Tennis Leader, and now, a newly qualified Level 1 coach.
His path hasn’t followed the traditional route, but with determination, support, and a passion for the game, Luay has overcome significant barriers and recently stepped into an assistant coaching role with GS4T.
Thanks to the LTA Tennis Foundation, Luay was invited to attend the HSBC Championships at The Queen’s Club—his first time at a professional tournament. After a behind-the-scenes tour, Luay was welcomed into the players’ lounge for a one-on-one chat with British No 2, Jacob Fearnley.
A conversation about coaching
Luay came prepared with thoughtful questions for Jacob, eager to learn from someone who’s experienced the game at the highest level. Their conversation covered:
- What makes a great coach?
- What should a young coach avoid when starting out?
- How have coaches shaped your journey as a player?
Jacob shared his personal insights, offering encouragement and advice that left a lasting impression on Luay.
We had an unforgettable day at Queen’s – from a warm welcome and behind-the-scenes tour to meeting tennis stars and watching the thrilling women’s semifinals in the Andy Murray Arena. Luay was over the moon to meet British No. 2 Jacob Fearnley and hasn’t stopped talking about the signed tennis balls and the electric atmosphere. He’s absolutely buzzing
A surprise moment with Jamie Murray
As if the day couldn’t get any better, Luay was introduced to Jamie Murray, Tournament Director and Grand Slam champion. Jamie invited Luay to take part in the official draw ceremony for the upcoming ATP week at Queen’s—a moment that capped off an unforgettable experience.
Jon Wildman, Director of Get Set 4 Tennis, shared just how much the day meant: “I just wanted to say a massive thank you for arranging today. Luay is buzzing and still talking about Jacob Fearnley and wanting to watch his matches at Queen’s next week! It’s safe to say this experience has had a massive impact on him—so thank you.”
This special day is a powerful reminder of the impact tennis can have when opportunities are opened up to everyone. Through the support of the LTA Tennis Foundation and partners like Get Set 4 Tennis, young people like Luay are not only finding their place in the sport—they’re helping shape its future.
