Energy efficiency
Harrow Weald LTC has undergone a major sustainability transformation, replacing all floodlights with LEDs, upgrading internal lighting and installing solar panels.
Heating upgrades
Harrow Weald have installed a highly efficient FAR-infrared heating system, enabling targeted, low‑energy heating that can be operated remotely — making the clubhouse warmer, more comfortable, and significantly more energy-efficient.
Community engagement
Harrow Weald LTC shines as a community‑driven charity hub. The clubhouse kitchen prepares around 180 meals per week for Help 4 The Homeless, while the venue also serves as a Warm Hub for local residents.
Reducing carbon emissions
Retford Tennis Club has made significant progress in cutting carbon emissions through a combination of renewable energy and efficient technology. The installation of solar panels with battery storage allows the club not only to reduce electricity costs but also to sell surplus energy back to the grid, maximising the value of their renewable investment.
All floodlights have been upgraded from halogen to energy efficient LEDs, while every indoor light is now LED-powered and fitted with motion sensors and daylight timers. Remote-controlled electric heaters ensure warmth is provided only when needed, reducing unnecessary consumption and supporting a more sustainable, low carbon site.
Waste management and recycling
The club supports responsible waste management through a clear, colour‑coded recycling system that makes it easy for members to separate general waste, glass, and recyclables. Members are encouraged to recycle responsibly and reduce their environmental impact during every visit.
Energy - lights, heating, solar!
Faringdon Tennis Club has been a pioneer in sustainable tennis facility design since relocating to its new venue over a decade ago. In 2014, the club became one of the UK’s earliest adopters of low‑energy LED floodlights, and they complemented this with double glazing, insulation upgrades and air‑source heat pumps to achieve the highest EPC rating possible for a retro‑fit building.
Their extensive solar array combined with underfloor heating and energy‑efficient lighting means the club is carbon negative — generating more energy than it consumes.
Supporting nature
Faringdon has transformed its outdoor environment by planting 650 trees around the courts, acting as natural windbreaks and wildlife habitats. A micro‑irrigation system ensures healthy growth with minimal water usage. Their sustainable drainage system reduces flood risk and supports ecological resilience across the site.
