LTA Youth home education resources receive top marks from Government

• 3 MINUTE READ

Tennis is a great sport to help with personal development, and now that has been officially recognised by the Government with endorsement of the LTA’s home education resources.

Coinciding with last week’s ‘National School Sport Week at Home’, the LTA Youth Schools & Tennis at Home education and activity resources have been listed by the Department of Education on the Government’s official list of online education resources for home learning for primary school children.

They are one of only seven resources approved for primary PE, with the LTA being the only sport national governing body to have resources listed.

A fresh, modern approach

Designed to develop children mentally and physically both on, and importantly, off the court, the innovative resource content features a range of both tennis activity challenges and tennis-themed lessons covering subjects such as numeracy, literacy, geography and science.

The resources form part of ‘LTA Youth’, the LTA’s new and innovative junior programme launched earlier this year to get more children to play and stay in tennis, whatever their ability and whatever their background. With a fresh, modern approach, LTA Youth builds on the success of taster programmes like Tennis for Kids to create a clear, compelling and engaging route from starter play through to competitions. It connects all tennis activity for juniors with the LTA’s schools programme fully embedded within it so the offer will look and feel the same, whether a child is playing in a school, park or club.

The sector-leading LTA Youth educational content would usually be used in schools to help teachers deliver tennis-themed lessons across the curriculum. However, following the introduction of lockdown measures earlier in the year they were quickly made available by the LTA for parents in considering how they could support their children’s education at home.

At the heart of LTA Youth is our desire to have a progressive programme that develops children as both players and people

Tom Gibbins, LTA Head of Education, said; “LTA Youth was developed to be fun, safe, inclusive and competitive, with fit for purpose content designed by experts – and all of that very much applies to our LTA Youth home education resources too. At the heart of LTA Youth is our desire to have a progressive programme that develops children as both players and people, and so we are delighted have become the only sport national governing body to have home education resources officially recognised by the Government and recommended to parents in this way”.

The LTA Youth Home Activities hub consists of four areas, aimed at children in school years 3-6 in England and Wales or P4-7 in Scotland:

  • Tennis at Home Exercises - short videos containing fun tennis exercises that also help children develop their movement and physical literacy
  • Personal Development Challenges - to explore and develop five key character qualities demonstrated by tennis players: motivation, resilience, perseverance, passion and respect
  • Learning Activities - tennis themed school lesson activities that can be done at home, including numeracy, literacy, geography and science.
  • Activity Cards - fun, simple activities including colouring, word searches and quizzes

The official Gov.uk website lists Government approved online educational resources for schools and parents to help children to learn at home during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. All resources included on the list have been assessed by the Department of Education with the support of subject experts to make sure they are high quality and appropriate for the students they are aimed at. The resources have also been assessed against certain technical elements.
