Italian Open 2025: Jack Draper pulls off comeback win to set up quarter-final clash against Carlos Alcaraz in Rome
• 2 MINUTE READ
Jack Draper’s dominant clay form continues as he defeated Corentin Moutet to reach the quarter-finals of the Italian Open.
The British No.1 had to fight back from a set down to get past the Frenchman before eventually punching his ticket to the last eight with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory in two hours and 20 minutes.
This marks the first time Draper has reached back-to-back Masters 1000 quarter-finals on the clay, following his run to the Mutua Madrid Open final a fortnight ago.
The world No.5 now sets up a blockbuster clash against reigning Roland Garros champion Carlos Alcaraz in a bid to reach the final four.
The Spaniard currently leads their head-to-head 3-2 but Draped claimed victory at their most recent meeting in the Indian Wells semi-final where he went on to claim his first Masters 1000 title.
"I'm proud of my efforts today," Draper said following his gritty fourth round win over Moutet. "I was a bit bamboozled at the start to be honest, I haven't played someone like that ever I don't think.
"I felt like I was on a string, I didn't know what I was doing. I came out in the second set and just fought for every point. Found a way in the end to pick up my level. It was a good one to come through, it feels good."
It was a slow start for the Brit who, after holding his opening service game, went on to lose five games on the bounce to see Moutet gain the early advantage.
The Frenchman is known for his tricky gamestyle and frequently caused Draper troubles with his drop shots and solid defence - drawing 15 unforced errors out of the Brit in the opening set.
However, Draper managed to find his rhythm in the early stages and was the first to edge his nose in front after finding the breakthrough in the eighth game of the second set. World No.83 Moutet was given a lifeline as Draper failed to close out the set, before the Brit quickly squashed those hopes with yet another break to force the decider.
With the momentum swinging in Draper's favour, the effects of Moutet's earlier matches - including a nearly four hour battle with Holger Rune on Sunday - began to take a toll, leading him to receive a medical time-out on his hamstring.
Both players looked to be struggling with their energy levels during the latter stages of the contest but it was Draper who dug deep to find one last break before going on to serve out the win on his first match point.
