British No.2 Jacob Fearnley has been gearing up for the grass court season off the back of an impressive stint on the European clay.

The British star is set to make his debut appearance at the HSBC Championships and has already confirmed a place at the Lexus Eastbourne Open this summer and will certainly be one to watch on the grass.

Fearnley has never played at Queen’s before having only been on the tour for 12 months, but the 23-year-old has had a meteoric rise through the rankings, which has seen him climb inside the world’s top 50.

After beginning his professional career with a grass court title in Nottingham, Fearnley has gone on to win four ATP Challenger titles and grabbed wins on his debut at all three Grand Slam events he’s played – most recently, a third round run at Roland Garros.

“I feel good – I didn’t really expect to do so well in the clay season and at the French (Open),” Fearnley said during a recent stay at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton as part of his grass court preparations.

“I’ve had a very positive reflection over the last few days but I’m looking forward to the grass now.

“I was expecting to go out first round so to win a few matches and get a lot of matches on clay was a big positive sign for me that I can play on all surfaces.

“I made an effort to work hard in every practice and every match so hopefully that fares me well going into the grass and for the rest of the year.”

It was this time last year that Fearnley announced himself to the British fans after he came through qualifying to win his first Challenger title in Nottingham, before going on to take a set off seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in the second round at Wimbledon.

Fearnley has all the weapons for success on the grass – a big forehand, effective serve and good movement on court – and now with a year’s experience on the tour, we could see the best from him this summer.

“I love being at home, I love being on the grass,” Fearnley added. “It’s good fun, there’s good vibes around the place especially at the NTC (National Tennis Centre) at this time of year so I really enjoy it.

“It’s not that physical than the clay so it’s a bit easier on the boy – a bit of a softer surface which is great.”

With the rise up the rankings and the performances at Grand Slams, one thing Fearnley will have to deal with this year is greater expectations.

Being a young British player ranked in the top 50 coming into the grass court season, all eyes will no doubt be on his performances, but Fearnley has shown multiple times that he has the mentality to deal with the pressure.

Alongside that pressure however, is also the backing of the home crowd behind you – something that the world No.49 felt last year and is looking forward to experiencing again.

“There’s a lot of pressure for the Brits this time of year,” he said. “You’re trying to play for wild cards and stuff but my best advice would be to try and stay in the present moment, take it match by match and just enjoy being on the grass, playing in front of your home fans. I think the results will come from there, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself

“It’s a bit different, I’ve played on grass a little bit more than clay but I think it’s the same thing – just to try and get as many matches, as many reps.

“Obviously Wimbledon is where you want to peak so I’ll use all of the tournaments leading up to that as preparation for the grass and hopefully I can have a few good runs.”
