Tennis Wales announce cancellation of summer leagues across Wales

• 1 MINUTE READ

Tennis Wales colleagues & committee members have liaised this week and unanimously agreed to cancel summer tennis leagues across Wales for 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The decision was reached having reviewed the current situation, taking into consideration the health of tennis players, and the current Government and public health guidance.

Mark Lewis, Competitions & Events Manager for Tennis Wales commented on the decision:

“We know that venues and players across Wales will be really disappointed, as we ourselves are, having to make this decision. Our priority in reaching this decision was to ensure we were following the Welsh Government advice to protect the health & wellbeing of tennis players. It’s extremely disappointing for thousands of tennis players who compete in the leagues. We have been liaising with venues and team captains who are extremely understanding and supportive of the decision taken.

Given that we have now lost nearly three months of the season, it makes it very difficult to re-arrange fixtures in the time left. There is also the uncertainty around how and when things may return to ‘normal’ which makes it increasingly difficult to arrange matches until this is clear.

We’re currently planning different scenarios for the winter season, but appreciate we’re in an unprecedented situation”.

Tennis Wales leagues are organised and delivered each year by volunteers and officials from both North & South Wales. Across Wales, more than 80 tennis clubs & venues, 220 teams and over 5,000 players compete in Tennis Wales sanctioned leagues & competitions. All other one day / week long LTA and Tennis Wales competitions are currently suspended until 28th June 2020.
