• 2 MINUTE READ

Welsh 18U County Cup teams from both North & South Wales were on show this weekend.

The LTA County Cup provides players with the opportunity to represent their county, with teams from 38 English Counties, Tennis Wales and Tennis Scotland all competing across Great Britain. Teams from North & South Wales took part this weekend

The North Wales 18U boys travelled to Taunton to compete. Day one saw them beat Isle of Man comprehensively with a 9-0 win. Day 2 and 3 however brought defeats to Oxfordshire and Somerset, both 7-2 in rubbers. These results saw them finish in third place and they will remain in Group 6 for next year. The North Wales 18U girls made the trip to Grantham in Lincolnshire and competed against Leicestershire, Bedfordshire and Lincolnshire, gaining promotion from the group after a very convincing weekend of high quality tennis. Day one say them beat Bedfordshire 8-1, then defeating Lincolnshire by the same scoreline. They then played Leicestershire in a winner takes all match with North Wales coming out on top with a 5-3 victory. This will see the girls compete in Group 3 next year.

In South Wales, the 18U boys travelled to Essex and competed well in a very strong Group 2 consisting of Surrey, Kent and Leicestershire. On Day one the boys lost 8-1 to Surrey, narrowly missed out on day two versus Kent 6-3, while day three saw them come as close as possible to a win but ultimately fell to a 5-4 defeat to Leicestershire. The girls headed to Norwich captained by Claire Powell and Lowri James and enjoyed a fantastic weekend which saw them promoted into Group 3 for next year. They came out on top in a close content with West of Scotland, edging a 5-4 victory that went down to the wire on day one. Day two saw them then take on North of Scotland who were dispatched 7-2. The final day saw a clash for promotion versus Norfolk in another winner takes all battle. The girls performed brilliantly winning all five singles rubbers with captain Claire Powell saying: “In all my years being involved with County tennis I haven’t seem a team be so calm and focused to take 5 singles matches in a row to secure promotion”.

Mark Lewis, Competitions Manager for Tennis Wales said: “It’s fantastic to see both sets of girls team’s gaining promotion to kick-start the County Cup Competitions for 2020.
