Welsh National Championships returns to Penarth for 2020

• 2 MINUTE READ

The Welsh National Championships is the Summer season-ending Grade 3 Tennis Tournament, taking place in August and gives players competing in Wales the chance to call themselves Wales National Champion.

The 2020 event will takes place from Sunday 23rd to Saturday 29th August across both Penarth tennis clubs; Windsor LTC, Penarth and Penarth LTC and will be sponsored by Tennis Wales’ official ball supplier HEAD.

This year’s event will include an additional U11 age groups in-line with the new LTA Competition Changes that will come into effect from 1st April. The hugely successful U18 Mixed Doubles event will return after the success of the inaugural event last year in Wrexham as well as a full programme of off-court activities across both venues including BBQ’s, social evenings as well as Padel and Touch Tennis offers.

Rob Wedlake, Tennis Squad Director based at Windsor LTC, Penarth said “We’re delighted to be co-hosting this year’s Welsh Championships. I have fond memories of competing in ‘Junior Welsh’ myself and we are particularly keen to support competitive opportunities for Welsh players and the valuable experiences that go with them. At Windsor you can look forward to some excellent facilities, a warm welcome, some Penarth sunshine and a trip to the beach for an ice-cream after play”.

Rob Cunningham, Head Coach at Penarth added “All of us at Penarth LTC are very excited to be hosting The Welsh Championships. For many years, PLTC was the home of the "Junior Welsh", hosting the event on its six grass courts, until the hot summer of 1976 where the courts never really recovered and the event moved elsewhere in the late 70s. The Championships' return to the club and town will be a wonderful occasion and celebration, especially for those members who have fond memories of competing for the title on their home soil”.

Mark Lewis, Competitions Manager at Tennis Wales commented “We are delighted to be working with both Penarth venues to build upon the great event we held last year in North Wales. They both have a track record of delivering award-winning competition themselves in recent years. The passion and excitement I have seen gives me great confidence that this year’s competition will be a memorable experience for players and their families. Having the venues within a short walk from each other, the vibrant town centre on the doorstep of the event, just across the water from Cardiff Bay gives us a picturesque venue fitting of our National Championships.

Entries for the competition will open on 8th July 2020 and can be found using the tournament code: S.W20S0500. You can add the tournament to your watch-list today by clicking on the tournament code.
