Alsager Tennis Club innovating to open tennis up to the local community

Initial results have been positive, with 70 individuals signing up to one of the new short-term membership choices – 60% of whom went on to become full members of the club.

Alsager Tennis Club in South Cheshire has seen great success over the last 12 months with its innovative approach to memberships, as a part of the club’s ‘opening up offer’.

The tennis club used the pandemic as an opportunity to freshen up its approach to memberships, providing short term summer and winter options, discounted offers, and a one-month ‘Back to Tennis’ offer to entice new members.

The Covid-19 pandemic hit everyone hard, but it has also provided us with an opportunity to introduce more people in our community to tennis and welcome new members to the club.

All of this was made possible following Alsager Tennis Club’s launch of the ClubSpark booking module in 2020, to support covid-19 guidance, something they also helped set up for other clubs.

Alsager Tennis Club chairman Dave Parkinson said: "I'm delighted with the progress the club has made over the last few years.

"We have committed members who have been determined keep the club moving in the right direction. The Covid-19 pandemic hit everyone hard, but it has also provided us with an opportunity to introduce more people in our community to tennis and welcome new members to the club.

"Last year, after ensuring the club was Covid-secure, we introduced new short-term taster memberships which proved to be very popular.

"Seventy people signed up to one of available packages, and of that, 42 went on to become full members as their membership came to an end.

"It has been fantastic to see so many new faces, of all ages, picking up a racket and enjoying the superb facilities we have at Alsager."

Founded in 1908, the recently renovated tennis club, offers four brand new all-weather Astro Turf courts with state-of-the-art LED floodlights and a new clubhouse. The venue has established links with five local primary schools and a high school and recently hosted the Sports Partnership inter-school competition. The club also provide access for local schools and adult learning centres through the Open your Doors initiative.

The tennis club plans to build on its recent success and is preparing to open up tennis to the community through our online tennis court booking service for Pay & Play and installation of Gate Access System technology. This will allow non-members the opportunity to book, pay and then play tennis at a time when the court is available, providing another revenue stream for the tennis club, whilst allowing locals within the community access to the tennis courts.
