US Open Draw 2020: Konta faces Watson in all-British first round tie

• 3 MINUTE READ

British Number 1 Johanna Konta will take on British Number 2 Heather Watson in the first round of the US Open 2020, it was confirmed today.

The draw for the women’s and men’s singles events revealed that the British pair will meet for the first time in a Grand Slam in what is set to be an enticing contest.

Konta – who is due to play former World Number 1 Victoria Azarenka in the semi-finals of the Western & Southern Open this week – will be looking to reach a Grand Slam final for the first time in her career while Watson will be hoping she can cause an upset against her in-form countrywoman.

In the men’s draw, British No.1 Dan Evans will begin his campaign against Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild. The World No. 28 has reached the third round of the US Slam on three occasions and if he advances to that stage this year he could meet Davis Cup-winning team mate Andy Murray

Murray – who has a long affiliation with the US Open where he made his Grand Slam debut in 2005 and claimed his maiden Grand Slam title in 2012 – has been drawn to play Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round.

Kyle Edmund will face Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in round one but has the prospect of playing against Novak Djokovic – who still remains unbeaten this year – in the event’s second stage.

Also competing in the second Grand Slam of the year is Cameron Norrie, who will take on ninth seed Diego Schwartzman in the opening round.
