• 2 MINUTE READ

Tennis Wales has announced the launch of a new Coach Development Centre designed to support the needs of new and existing coaches across Wales.

The Coach Development Centre (CDC) is one of 12 in Great Britain, focussed on delivering an exceptional experience for anyone aspiring to support or lead tennis activity and grow participation across the country.

The Tennis Wales Coach Development Centre is being delivered with two exceptional partners; Cardiff Metropolitan University and Wrexham Tennis Centre to provide a first class service for Welsh coaches to develop their skills. A superb team of tutors from across Wales and Britain has been recruited, who share our vision and will deliver the highest quality of training & qualifications.

What’s on offer from the Coach Development Centre;

  • Level 1 – 3 tennis coaching qualifications
  • First aid training
  • Safeguarding training
  • Mentoring & coach networking events
  • National Coaching Conference
  • Bursaries
  • Competition organiser & referee qualifications

Merlin Van De Braam, LTA Head of Coach Development and Support had this to say about the new coach development landscape:

“Coaches are the lifeblood of our sport and play a key role to attract and maintain more people in the game. Every year we have around 3,000 coaches taking different levels of qualifications on the LTA coaching pathway, and so we want to ensure that we have a best-in-class coach education system in place across the whole of the UK to help coaches develop and grow the sport.

“With ITF recognition at Gold Level, we are proud of the reputation LTA Coach Education holds, but we know more can be done to equip coaches with the right knowledge and skills to serve the tennis industry of the future. We are therefore delighted to have been able to appoint such a high calibre set of providers to partner with us for the new delivery model and operate our network.

“LTA Coach Development Centres will provide positive learning environments for the future and current workforce of tennis in Britain. They will bring together leading grass roots programmes and coach development industry expertise, including from across several leading universities. As part of a modernised LTA curriculum, CDCs will deliver a core and elective training structure which will enable coaches to specialise within a qualification based on their needs or interests.”

Ellie Lewis, Coaching & Volunteering Manager for Tennis Wales commented;

“The Tennis Wales Coach Development Centre will support our existing network of almost 200 accredited tennis coaches in Wales but also focus on training the next generation of coaches. We’ll be working with our team of tutors and our two partner venues to ensure anyone who aspires to work or volunteer in tennis, has the pathway and opportunity to do so”.
