Martock Tennis Club had all the tension of Centre Court at Wimbledon when the South East Somerset Schools Mini Red Tennis Final was held on Thursday 24th June.
It was a long journey to the final with over 450 young people from 38 schools across South Somerset taking part in 'cluster' competitions over the last two months. The 450 players were whittled down to 32 participants from eight schools who competed in the final.
The eight primary schools that took part in the final were Wincanton, Castle Cary, Preston (Yeovil), Ash (Martock), St Bartholomew's (Crewkerne), Greenfylde (Ilminster), Monteclefe (Somerton) and Rode (Frome).
After some really exciting tennis, Ash and St Bartholomew's schools were the respective winners of the two groups. In the Final, Ash defeated St Bartholomew's 5 matches to 1. Ash primary school and St Bartholomew's first school will now represent South East Somerset in the inaugural Somerset Schools Mini Red Tennis Final at the Blackbrook Tennis Centre in Taunton on 1 July 2010.
The Mini Tennis project was delivered in partnership with the South East Somerset School Sports Partnership, Senior Competition Manager and the Lawn Tennis Association. The project has been funded by the South Somerset Tennis Development Group, which was set up in 2006 by the Sports Development team at South Somerset District Council.
