The Hitting Coach will be an integral member of the Tennis coaching team at St Mary’s Calne and will help to further develop our expanding coaching programme. The role will predominantly be providing hitting sessions for girls aged 11 to 18. Candidates must demonstrate a very good playing ability as well as being well organised, reliable, presentable, and enthusiastic. The successful candidate may have the opportunity to take on more responsibility within restringing, video analysis, assisting with tournaments and social events, and assisting with U11 groups.

Main Responsibilities

Work as part of the coaching team predominantly delivering individual hitting sessions for St Mary’s pupils
Work closely with the School Shop with assistance in re-stringing, racquet and equipment sales.
In line with LTA and Academy Coaching philosophies, provide clear and imaginative lesson plans to ensure progressive player development.
Work towards the theme and objectives of lesson plans.
Continue to monitor the development of the pupil and devise lessons plans that develop with them and provide challenge.
Be clear and accurate with communication.
Use demonstrations regularly and make sure information is understood.
Coordinate safe movement of equipment before, during and after all sessions.
Communicate effectively with parents of players, including providing details on progress and answering queries.
Be available to support Tennis Academy events.
Work alongside other Tennis Academy staff to ensure best practice, health and safety and advice on potential risks involved with activities.
To act as an ambassador for the Tennis Academy by abiding to good practice, behaviour and respecting fellow professionals, pupils, and parents.
Ensure LTA qualifications are kept up to date.

The St Mary’s School campus is home to St Mary’s Calne, St Margaret’s Preparatory School and the St Mary’s School Sports Centre. Both schools are recognised leaders in the field independent education, and the Sport Centre is open to students, staff and the wider community on a membership basis. The School runs the St Mary’s Calne Tennis Academy (SMCTA), managed by Director of Tennis, Jonathan Hayes. Extra-curricular opportunities beyond the classroom are a vital and integral part of life for students. They are woven into the timetable during the day and in the evenings.

Officiating qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential
Be aware of LTA Coaching Standards and philosophies
Knowledge of developing all shots in tennis, in line with LTA Mini Tennis progressions
Working as part of a successful team
Prepared to work unsociable hours including weekends and bank holidays when necessary
Experience in using initiative and adapting to different situation within a tennis environment

Desirable
Have played competitive tennis
Have coached individual and mixed groups
