Heather Watson cheers at Wimbledon

Heather Watson was a sensation of the grass-court season this year. From defeating seeds at Eastbourne to reaching another Wimbledon final, she was a major part of a successful summer for British tennis. So when #ACE sat down with her, there was only one subject for us to discuss – her addiction to Love Island, of course...

It takes Henri Kontinen just a few seconds before he leaves the room. #ACE has raised the subject of Love Island with Heather Watson and her mixed doubles partner at Wimbledon has heard enough. Our suggestion as a subject of conversation has gone down like a lead balloon. Just at the mere mention of the show. We haven’t even got ono the subject of whether or not it’s fair to label Gabby a “snake” or not, which had been a trending topic across social media ahead of our sit-down together.

Kontinen evidently thinks his compatriots will find a better use of their time in the room next door

“Come on guys, follow me,” he declares to the Finnish journalists who have been waiting in the room with us. This was supposed to be a joint press junket after the pair have just won their quarter-final over Rohan Bopanna and Gabriella Dabrowski, but Kontinen evidently thinks his compatriots will find a better use of their time in the room next door than listening to us ask about Team Montalex (of which Watson is only too happy to inform us she is a supporter).

He waves bye to Watson, laughing as he walks down the corridor. It’s a sign of the camaraderie the pair share; the same camaraderie that helped them on their way to reaching another Wimbledon final this year. The Finn and Watson were reigning mixed doubles champions in SW19, but they eventually succumbed to defeat by Jamie Murray and his new mixed partner, the Swiss Martina Hingis.

The showdown in the final would come a few days after we spoke with Watson and at that moment, she had other things to be considering. Murray’s net play was at the bottom of our agenda as we went in with the hardline questioning.
