Great Britain put up a brilliant battle against Bulgaria on the opening day of ATP Cup action before eventually falling 2-1.

British No.2 Cam Norrie kickstarted the team's tie and faced world No.423 Dimitar Kuzmanov. He took the opening set 6-2, but the Bulgarian fought back to force a decider before Norrie took charge once again to clinch a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory.

British No.1 Dan Evans was next up against world No.20 Grigor Dimitrov and with a display of impressive shotmaking, he won the first set 6-2. The second saw a shift in momentum as Dimitrov turned the tables to take it 6-4 and put Bulgaria on the scoreboard by winning the decider 6-1.

Joe Salisbury and Jamie Murray teamed up for the decisive doubles rubber and former world No.3 Dimitrov returned to court with compatriot Alexandar Lazarov.

This time round, the first set went to the Bulgarian team, but the British duo dug deep in the second to force a match tie-break. They found themselves with two match points, but Dimitrov and Lazarov proved their persistence and seized the thriller 7-6 (5), 6-7 (2), [11-9] at 02:47 on Saturday morning.

The Brits will return to Sydney's Ken Rosewall Arena on Sunday 5, 17:30 local time (06:30 GMT - Sunday morning) when they'll take on Belgium in their second round-robin match. Their final group stage clash against Moldova will take place on Tuesday 7, 10:00 local time (23:00 GMT - Monday evening). The winner of each of the six groups, plus the two next best teams, will advance to the knockout stages.
