Reigning Grand Slam champions Alfie Hewett, Gordon Reid, Jordanne Whiley and Andy Lapthorne are among a star-studded line-up for the LTA’s inaugural Wheelchair Team Battle, which is being held at the National Tennis Centre in London from 15-17 December.

Fifteen of the LTA’s Podium and Podium-potential players and rising stars from the LTA’s National Age Group Programme will be split into two teams and will meet across three days of singles, doubles and mixed doubles competition. Each match will be worth one point to either The Knights or the Lionhearts, the two teams captained by Marc McCarroll and Martyn Whait, respectively. The team with the most points at the end of Thursday’s third day of play will be declared the winners.

Reid, who completed a career Grand Slam of men’s doubles titles this season partnering Hewett, will face his regular doubles partner in what is arguably the feature singles match on Wednesday's second day of play. The world No.3 and world No.5 reprise a mouth-watering head-to-head that brought a 7-5, 7-5 win for Hewett when they met at the LTA Wheelchair Tennis Series at the NTC in September, while they are currently level at 12 wins apiece in international competition.

Rio Paralympic men’s singles gold medallist Reid, said: “I’m really looking forward to it. I think it’s a good opportunity not only for a bit of competitive match play but also to get everybody on the wheelchair programme together. We often don’t get a lot of time to spend with each other, so to get a mixture of the juniors, men, women and quads together and have some friendly competitiveness will continue to build that team spirit we’ve been building over the last few years.”

Tuesday’s eight matches will also see Reid and Hewett in mixed doubles action against each other, when they partner Britain’s top two ranked women’s players, Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley, respectively in the last match of the day. Midway through Tuesday’s schedule the first mixed doubles contest will see Britain’s top two ranked junior boys, Dahnon Ward and Ben Bartram, partner two-time Paralympic doubles bronze medallists Shuker and Whiley.

Ward, who recently won the International Tennis Federation’s inaugural Junior Player of the Year award, will get the Wheelchair Team Battle underway on Tuesday when he takes on two-time US Open quad singles champion Andy Lapthorne. National Age Group Programme players Abbie Breakwell and Ruby Bishop, both former National School Games gold medallists, will meet in the opening women’s singles match.

Matches from the Wheelchair Team Battle will be broadcast live across the LTA web and social channels, on Facebook and YouTube, with Tuesday’s first day of play starting at 10am.
