Hewett and Reid seal second British Open men’s doubles title

• 2 MINUTE READ

Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid secured their second British Open men’s doubles title on the penultimate day of this year’s tournament after defeating French second seeds Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer 6-2, 6-3 for their seventh title together in 2021.

Top seeds Hewett and Reid, who won their first major doubles title as a partnership in Nottingham in 2015 before finishing runners-up to Houdet and Peifer in the 2016 final, raced to a 4-0 lead on their way to taking the first set in 44 minutes.

The Brits, who won their fourth Wimbledon title just two weeks ago, then broke Peifer’s serve for a 3-1 second set cushion and maintained the pressure on their opponents to claim their 34th win in their last 36 matches and seal their second Super Series title of the season.

“It means a lot, It’s our home Super Series and it’s th first time we’ve won it together since 2015, so it’s good to come back and get this title in our last tournament before heading off to Tokyo for the Paralympics. It’s obviously good for the confidence as we keep building towards that.  It’s one that we’re really going to enjoy.

“A lot of the mindset and the tactics this week has all been about looking ahead to the Paralympics. For us s a team to have played a couple of really good pairs this week and all of them being together at the Paralympics, it’s a good test to see where we’re at. We’ve obviously had a great year and have continued that this week.”

The fourth day’s play in Nottingham began with the quad doubles final. After defeating the second seeds earlier this week, Brits Antony Cotterill and Andy Lapthorne found Dutch top seeds Sam Schroder and Niels Vink a more difficult proposition and despite taking a 3-1 lead in both set, Cotterill and Lapthorne eventually slipped to a 6-3, 6-2 losss. For Vink it was a second successive British Open quad doubles title after being victorious in 2019 with South Africa’s Lucas Sithole, while it was a third career Super Series title for the all-Dutch pairing.

There was another British-Dutch contest in the women’s doubles final, but the outcome was the same as top seeds Diede de Groot and Aniek van Koot proved more consistent than Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley. De Groot and Van Koot eventually wrapped up a 6-2, 6-1 win to make it back-to-back British Open titles in Nottingham.

Whiley will now faces De Groot in Sunday’s women’s singles final before Hewett takes on Japan’s world No.1 Shingo Kunieda in the men’s singles final.
