Aegon Manchester Trophy History | Tennis in Britain

History

Throughout its history, The Northern Lawn Tennis Club has held international tennis events, attracting players such as John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Stefan Edberg, Fred Perry, Jimmy Connors, Billie-Jean King, and Margaret Court.

More recently the Club has hosted a Men’s $50k ATP Challenger, with the charismatic Dustin Brown winning the 2016 title.

In 2017 the Aegon Manchester Trophy will be a women’s $100k event (doubling the prize money from the 2016 men’s event).

The quality of the club’s grass courts have often found it referred to as ‘the Wimbledon of the North’, the title of a book written in 1981 to celebrate 100 years at The Northern.

The Aegon Manchester Trophy 2017 will host world class grass court tennis, excellent hospitality, free travel on the Metrolink and an area for all to come and try tennis. The event is proving to be a popular destination for tennis fans in Manchester and the north-west and in 2016 was voted Manchester event of the year.

The Club boasts 7 grass, 6 synthetic clay, 3 clay, and 3 indoor courts, together with 6 squash courts, a gym, and dance studio.
