Summer County Cup 2021 - Ilkley
• 3 MINUTE READ
Notts County teams are sponsored by Brenntag
Team Top: Andy Higham, Phil Peters, Callum Chivers (C), Patrick Foley, Eban Straker-Meads
Bottom: Jamie Praditgnam, Carl Saxby, Pierre Luiggi, Ben Mactaggart, Roy Keegan
After a year away from the event, we were looking forward to representing the County again on the grass courts of Ilkley. We had a much changed team with 3 of our top performers unable to get back to the UK, which gave others an opportunity to step up and play some high level doubles against tough opposition.
Day 1 vs Lincolnshire
Summer County Cup debuts handed to Roy Keegan and Carl Saxby for the first of our local rival matches of the week. In a match that we needed to win to get some momentum for the rest of the week, we never really got going and went down 8-1, with Roy and Carl taking our solitary win with a good performance.
Day 2 vs Derbyshire
A match that we had been looking forward to for a while. No doubt that we were coming in as massive underdogs against very experienced opponents. We were able to bring Eban Straker-Meads back into the team after completing his isolation period. Whilst that strengthened us, we were still massively up against it and the quality of the opposition was too much for us and unfortunately, we went down 9-0.
Day 3 vs Northamptonshire
We had to find some magic against Northants. We decided to make some big changes to the line-up to freshen things up after 2 tough days. Andy Higham and Roy Keegan took a good win in round 1, whilst Patrick Foley and Phil Peters lost a narrow first set before the opponents accelerated away. In round 2, Eban and Jamie Praditgnam won their match on a match tiebreak to keep us alive going into the final round. Unfortunately, it was too much for us to turn it around. Patrick and Phil did manage to win their final match in straight sets in over 2 and a half hours meaning Notts lost 6-3.
Day 4 vs Norfolk
Another tough day against tough opponents. We needed to win comfortably to give ourselves any chance of survival and with us being forced into many changes again, this proved to be too much of a challenge. Notts lost 9-0.
Day 5 vs Somerset
With both Notts and Somerset having their relegation confirmed before the start of play, we played a shorter format. At the end of play, Notts lost 5-4.
A challenging week but a week that is still a highlight of the year on the tennis calendar. We all missed it last year and hopefully that will be the last time we have to miss it.
