This year’s U9 county cup took place over at Boston Tennis Club in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire competed in group D alongside Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and the hosts Lincolnshire. Our team on the day: Reid Dixon, Jibrael Niazi, Max Goodridge, Max Silverston-Lin and Luca Yates. The team ran through some individual goals beforehand to ensure their development on court throughout the event.

First up the team took on Leicestershire in a windy encounter with Reid playing at number 1 seed and Jibrael at number 2. All the players had to adjust to not only the conditions but also the last minute change to the FAST4 format in which the players did absolutely amazing in to say they were only familiar with tie-break scoring. Reid fought hard and grinded to the last point but fell short 4-2 with Jibrael following up in a similar fashion. Max Goodridge and Max Silverston-Lin up next at number 3 and 4 stepped on court with a surprise of light consistent rain throughout their match but it did not stop them from competing with the same goals of improving after every game, win or loss. Max G pushed his opponent to a tie-break in which he lost 4-3(3) and Max S was down 0-2 and brought it back to 2-2 after adjusting to the game style of his opponent and committing to his aggressive forehand. After some close exchanges the win went to Leicestershire in the final singles match. Reid/Jibrael teamed up for the first time and certainly not the last in the first doubles of the day which ended in a tie-break with Leicester taking the win. Max G/Luca also fell short in our second doubles.

Moving on to Northamptonshire the boys got their first win in the doubles which came from Jibrael and Luca, a big 4-2 win showcasing how well they engaged as a team but most importantly remembering their individual goals which allowed them to play with a plan! With the doubles being our only victory, it showed a great deal of growth from all the players as Northamptonshire ended up finishing 1st overall at the end of the event. S  uper tough matches for all the boys who stepped on for singles, came off as stronger tennis players and kept each other company with jokes and ways to pass the time whilst we had a rain delay.

Finally the boys finished their first ever county cup experience with the hosts Lincolnshire, a big step for Jibrael and Luca who pushed their 2nd doubles into a tie-break but fell short 4-3(4). Their determination on court really showed, this was mirrored on the next court where Reid/Max S teamed up for the first time and executed some big serves with some close games that went to deuce, but the opponents got the better of the boys and took the win. With Reid still playing as number 1 seed for Notts, he played an unbelievable match against Lincs, never got down and pushed to the last point with great movement around the court followed by some brave shots. Lincs took the win 4-3(5) -  nail biting as Reid was 5-1 down to bring it back 5-5!   Luca also competed in his first singles of the day, he thoroughly enjoyed it and came off smiling to his teammates which really summed up the day as they grew stronger by supporting one another.   Notts ended the day with a 4th place finish.

A great day of learning, overcoming and being part of a team for the boys. Thank you to all the parents that travelled all the way and showed great support throughout the day!
