Winter County Cup - Men's

The Isle of Man Men’s Tennis Team recently took part in the Winter County Event at the Kingston Park Tennis Centre in Hull.

The team were without some of their more established county players, but this gave a chance for new players to step up and represent the island, for their first time. The team was Adam Pyatt-Coppell, Sean Drewry, Jayden Go, Nigel Hunter, Jon Gower-Jackson, Nerijus Gricevicius and Craig Swann.

The first match was against Hereford & Worcestershire, who went on to win the event and they proved to be strong, winning 9-0. All players acquitted themselves well.

On the second day against Wiltshire the players stepped up from the disappointment from the first day and they all pushed their opponents, with Gricevicius taking the first set 6-4 against Sebastian Pasmore, but the Wiltshire player fought back to take the next two sets. Pyatt-Coppell playing at number 3 had a marathon match against Rory Smith, eventually winning 6-3 5-7 6-2.

All the doubles were well contested but no wins were forthcoming, so the final score was 8-1 to Wiltshire. The third day against South of Scotland was tough, as the players were not used to playing so many matches against this level of opponents and South of Scotland were able to bring in fresh players, due to having a larger squad. South of Scotland went on to win 9-0. It was great to see the improvement in the players over the whole event whilst maintaining excellent team spirit, which hopefully augurs well for the future.
