After attending the Basic Referee course, attendees are able to apply to join The Association of British Tennis Officials (ABTO) as a trainee member.
Referees who have passed the Full Referee course – to retain this grade, officials must remain members of ABTO, have endorsement from the ABTO Grading Sub-Committee, return their completed Referee Work Card by the annual deadline and complete 5 days per calendar year.
Referees who have completed a minimum of 10 days per calendar year may be re-graded to R4, at the January Grading meeting – to retain this grade, officials must remain members of ABTO, have endorsement from the ABTO Grading Sub-Committee, return their completed Referee Work Card by the annual deadline and complete 10 days per calendar year.
Referees who are selected for and pass the National Level Referee course – to retain this grade, officials must remain members of ABTO, have endorsement from the ABTO Grading Sub-Committee, return their completed Referee Work Card by the annual deadline and complete 20 days per calendar year.
Referees with sufficient experience may be re-graded to R2 at the January Grading meeting - to retain this grade, officials must remain members of ABTO, have endorsement from the ABTO Grading Sub-Committee, return their completed Referee Work Card by the annual deadline and complete 25 days per calendar year.
Referees who have been selected for and passed the ITF Level 2 Officiating School - to retain this grade, officials must remain members of ABTO, have endorsement from the ABTO Grading Sub-Committee, return their completed Referee Work Card by the annual deadline and complete 30 days per calendar year.
Competition Grade : Referee Grades
1 - National : R1. An R2 referee may be considered.2 - National : R1 or R2. An R3 referee may be considered. 3 - Regional : R3 or higher. An R4 referee may be considered. 4 - County : R4 or higher. An R5 referee may be considered.
