Aegon British Tennis Rankings Guide

An Aegon British Tennis Ranking is a measure of where you stand in your age group nationally and within your county.

Rankings are calculated every week based on points awarded to players for competing in tournaments in the Seniors, Open, 18, 16, 14 and 12 & under age categories.

Here’s how your ranking works: 

• You enter and play in a tournament
• Ranking points are awarded based on how far you make it in the tournament; as you progress through the rounds you build up more points
• Points are added to your overall total
• Every week the list is updated and your ranking may move up or down
• Your ranking total is based on your best 6 tournaments (best 3 for Seniors) from the past 12 months
• If you have the most points, you’ll be at the top of the ranking list for that age group.

NOTE: The junior age group ranking lists are based on performance in domestic competitions only. The top players in each age group will be competing at international level and have Tennis Europe and/or ITF rankings and may not, therefore, appear high up on the GB listings.

How to earn ranking points:

Ranking points are only awarded for Grade 1 (highest) to Grade 5 tournaments. Grade 6, 7 and U tournaments do not carry ranking points but are important for your progression to the higher grades.

Different grades of tournaments have different points allocations; the higher the grade, the more points you can get. Only one set of points is allocated per event i.e. a player who competes in both the qualifying and main draw events of a tournament will only get one set of points. Any team competition graded 1 to 5 will also count towards your ranking.

How your ranking is calculated?

Your ranking is calculated using your best six tournament (best 3 for Seniors) performances over a rolling 12-month period. Because of this you may notice some of your ranking points dropping off if the tournaments you entered were more than 12 months ago.

Your ranking is used to: 

• Measure your standard of play against those in your age group
• Help determine your seeding in a tournament – seeding is a standard practice to ensure that top players are split in the draw and don’t play each other in the early rounds
• Help determine entry into a tournament, if there is a decision between you and a player with an equal rating. In most cases, your rating is used first to determine entry.

What is a GB National Ranking which is used by the ITF for international tournaments?   

A GB ITF national ranking can be assigned to British players who do not have an international ranking but wish to compete in ITF Pro Circuit tournaments. This ranking serves as an order of merit for tournament acceptance. The GB national rankings are determined as follows:

ITF Mens and Womens circuits (up to 500 of each gender permitted)

1. Export of players ordered according to Aegon British Tennis ratings 
2. Players with highest ATP/WTA rankings excluded
3. Players aged 35 or older excluded (however may be included in subsequent submissions as requested)
4. Foreigners excluded (ie. those affiliated to another country as determined by ITF)
5. List sorted by ratings
6. Players with GB Open age group rankings inside the top 100 who did not make the cut in terms of rating added 
7. Where number of players in the same (lowest) ratings level exceeds the maximum allowed players excluded according to age (oldest first).

ITF Junior Circuit: the LTA submits a list of male and female players (up to 75 of each gender permitted) to the ITF.  The lists are ordered based on a player's Aegon British Tennis rating followed by 18U ranking. 

Submissions to the ITF are made quarterly, shortly after each ratings run appeals process.
