Jonathan Marray and Anna Smith reached the Mixed Doubles third round at Wimbledon. They had played against the Polish /Italian pairing of Matkowski and Garbin in the second round and won after a gruelling 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-3), 4-6 match, to make their way through and play against the Russian partnership of Dmitry Tursunov and Vera Dushevina.
After this win Marray said: "It was pretty tight in the third set when we came off, it was nice to come on, play a good three, four games, and then get the win. We knew we had to come out and be relaxed and be ready to go straight away. It's nice to have somebody who makes the returns, it's good fun, it's relaxed, and we enjoy it."
After a hard fought match the Russian pairing moved into the quarter final stages after seeing off the British Pair 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-6.
There were five British players lined up in round three of the Junior Championships for the first time since the year 2000 and 2 of these 5 were Yorkshire Players Eleanor Dean and Tara Moore.
Eleanor, playing her first Wimbledon tournament and only fifth ever grass court match, lead the way into the last 16. The 14 year old held her nerve dramatically to stave off a second set comeback from Ksenia Kirillova to win 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, coming back from 1-4 down in the final set, as she won five games in a row.
Dean was delighted with her performance after the match. “I'm really excited, it's just such an amazing experience for me, it's such a pleasure to be here. I know I've got many years ahead, but first time is really important.
“I'm getting great support, I was on TV today, my friends are all texting me, so it's really exciting, I really enjoyed myself today. I was 4-0 down in the third, I just lost a bit of focus, concentration, but I used the crowd's support and energy positively, and came back. I love being in front of the crowd, my maturity on court can grow from having that support, it's an amazing experience.” Dean went on to play the No. 9 seed Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the last 16, where Pliskova showed her power and beat her 6-0, 6-2.
Tara Moore in has also been in action in the Girls Draw. After her 3rd round win against Nigina Abduraimova 6-1, 6-3 Tara said "I was feeling quite ill yesterday, after doubles, and today I just walked on court and gave it my all. I was really nervous because I didn't feel 100%, but she was nervous too and I just took advantage of that. I saw her play qualies, and also watched her knock out Pliskova the round before, I expected that to be a tough match, I'm just happy that I got through it quite easily. The mental side of my game has really been key recently, I've taken strides in the right direction, my performance is getting better, that's all I can ask for."
Tara made her way into the Quarter Finals where she was to meet fellow Brit Laura Robson, ensuring a GB player moved into the Girls semi finals at the Championships. Moore made sure that Robson was made to work hard for the match, but eventually Robson gained her composure and won the match 7-5, 6-1.
Moore said "She played really well, all credit to her, I played a good, solid first few games, but my performance tapered off to the end of the first set and she took advantage. I've played against opponents of the same stature as her before, Sloane Stephens, who I beat two weeks ago, and it proves to me that I'm not far off, but there's still a lot of work to do. It's been a great two weeks."
