Peter Ashley was in action over the weekend as part of the Great Britain 14U boys’ teams at the European Summer Cup tournaments in Magaluf.
The boys' team, that consisted of Alexander Sendegeya, Josh Sapwell, Shakeel Manji and Ashley, led by captain Iain Hughes, finished in third place overall after two victories from three matches.
A successful qualifying campaign last week brought victories over Portugal and home favourites Spain to secure their place in the weekend’s final round where they met Italy in their opening match.
Sapwell recovered from a set down in his rubber against Gianluigi Quinzi to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 before the Italians levelled the match with a straight sets defeat of Peter Ashley by Filippo Baldi.
However Sapwell earned his second success of the day as he partnered Sendegeya to victory in the doubles with a 6-2, 6-3 victory to set up a semi-final match against France.
The match was to prove a step to far for the British juniors, losing 3-0 to the defending champions, who then went on to win the title for the third consecutive year and without losing a match.
The British boys took on Russia in the third/fourth place play-off match on Sunday, claiming another 2-1 victory after a singles win for Ashley was followed with a win for Sapwell and Sendegeya in the doubles.
Also, in other Yorkshire News this week, Anna Fitzpatrick, who was playing at the AEGON British Tour in Notingham as reported on Friday, won her final match against Yasmin Clarke 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (3) to make it the second win for her at Nottingham on this tour.
