The Sussex 14/u Girls team of Helen Clements (Badgers), Elspeth Griffiths (Maresfied), Mariella Blackwell (Sutton Tennis Academy) , Zoe Andrews and Claudia James (The Weald) and Holly Danbury (Compton and The Weald) headed to Nottingham over the Bank Holiday weekend knowing they faced a difficult task in maintaining their position in Division 1. The weekend started well as Sussex beat Essex 4-2 on the first day when Helen Clements, Elspeth Griffiths and Mariella Blackwell all winning their singles matches. Day two and a different story, Surrey their opponents. Having taken the opening set in three out of four singles, the team were unable to close out any of the matches and went down to a disappointing 1-5 defeat. The final day saw both Helen Clements and Mariella Blackwell make amends for the disappointments of the previous day in winning their two singles matches against Middlesex. With rain sweeping in, the doubles had to be abandoned and the singles restricted to short sets. Sadly the Sussex girls never coming to terms with their opponents play and thereby losing the match to the eventual winners. However, all is not lost as our of this year's team will still be eligible for selection next year. This years experience should help them in twelve months regain their position in Division 1.
