Falmer based Julian Cash and Sam Venn and pupils at St Bedes and Steyning Grammar respectively, clinched their 1st European event when securing victory in the 14/u Boys doubles at the recent Kaleva Open in Finland. The win coming in an epic three set match 16-14 in the 3rd set champions tie break over their Finnish and Russian opponents. Cash & Venn unseeded and the lowest ranked doubles partnership started with a 1st round win over German opponents before then sweeping a side the No1 seeds in straight sets in the Quarter finals followed by Finnish opponents in the Semi Finals. Meanwhile 16-year old Abbi Melrose fresh from helping Sussex retain the County Cup reached her 2nd ITF 18/u Girls semi final at the Kramfors Junior Challenge in Sweden. On her way to the semi’s Melrose defeated Sweden’s No.5 seed Rebecca Poikajarvi before finally bowing out to the No.4 seed from Spain in the semi final.On the domestic front The Weald ‘s 13-year-old Peter Molloy reached the finals of the 16-under Winter County indoor event at Falmer before loosing a closely fought final 10-5 in the third set champions tie break to Norfolk’s Johnnie Carmichael Plester.Along the coast at Eastbourne, Lea Manga proved too strong for her fellow competitors as she became Winner of the Winter County under 9 Mini Orange Tournament at Eastbourne Sports Park. Manga beat Amber Pennington 7-1 7-1; Chloe Ainsworth 7-0 7-1, Mia Apps 7-1 7-0. And Isabella Swann 7-0 7-2; Swann finishing runner up.
