Henfield teenager Julian Cash will remember the end of 2011 as being the best of his Tennis life. 15 year old Julian who attends St Bedes School and trains at the HPC Virgin Active Brighton under the guidance of Julie Salmon and Rhys Hanger travelled to Bolton for the National tour 18/u and 16/u events.
In the 18’s event Julian came through qualifying and made it through to the round of 16 before going out to the much older David Fox. However, his main focus was always to be the 16/u event with the view of seeing how deep into the draw he could go. Going into the event Julian was unseeded and after facing qualifiers in the rounds of 32 and 16 faced a tough draw with the No.4 seed and nationally No.6 Chris Morrow in the quarter finals. In the form of his life, Morrow was clinically dispatched 3 and 4 to leave Julian an even bigger task in facing the No.1 seed and ranked No.1 Nationally, Dorset’s Adam Glynn. Having lost a tight 1st set 4-6 Julian’s mental toughness was evidently clear as he came through for the biggest win of his career 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 for his 1st National final at 16’s.
Having dispatched the No.1 seed another Dorset player Josef Dodridge the No.3 seed and nationally ranked No.4 stood between Julian and victory. Victory was never in doubt as Julian controlled the match with a 4 and 2 victory to end 2011 on a high. The victory, taking Julian (dependent on other results) into the top 5 nationally at 16/u age group.
On the back of his recent good form Firstly Julian has been selected for a SportsAid sponsorship. His main sponsor will be Comet. To cap a wonderful year for Julian, the LTA have selected him for the 16U Winter Cup GB team. The quali's will be played in Istanbul at the beginning of Feb.
