Not only was it a fantastic achievement for both the Surrey Boys and Girls 10U teams to make it through to the finals, for the first time ever, but for the Girls to come away as Champions really was a remarkable achievement by all!
On the weekend of 11/12th June, both of our Surrey 10U teams made their way up to the Bolton Arena, accompanied by Team Managers; Nick Jacques and David Lovejoy, and Team Coaches; Caroline Jordan and Dave Cox.
Both teams started strongly and worked their way through their initial matches to reach the final stages on the Sunday to fight it out for 1st and 2nd place. The boys came up against a strong Yorkshire side and the Girls met our close rivals Middlesex.
The Boys team, made up of; Jack Draper, Michael Mhangami, Alex Page and George Davis, played some fantastic tennis to take it right down to a final shootout for the title. Unfortunately the momentum was with Yorkshire and they were just too strong in the final doubles and took the tie-break 10-7 to be crowned champions.
The Grls team, made up of; Gemma Heath, Abby Taylor, Tanysha Dissanayake and Emily Chetwood, also showed great technical ability and spirit to again take it down to a tense tie-break shootout. This time resulting in Surrey being crowned champions after some brilliantly executed points from the doubles pair.
Both teams played above and beyond the best of their ability and showed great determination and enthusiasm. The weekend was a great success for Surrey and credit really must go to all the Team Managers, Team Captains, the players themselves, parents for their support, and also to Mark Padfield for his continuous hard work with all these players. The commitment and team spirit shown by the players was remarkable for players of their age, and we hope this will put them in good stead for years to come!
