Axbridge Church of England School triumphed in the Cheddar Valley First Schools cluster competition held at Cheddar Tennis Club in June. The competition was organised by club coach Stephen Pearce and funded by grants from Sedgemoor District Council and the LTA.
Cheddar Tennis Club has an excellent, long standing relationship with local schools, having run taster coaching, assembly demonstrations, after school clubs and talent id sessions over many years. The cluster tournament was run for the first time last year and this year schools were once again invited to provide teams of four; two boys and two girls, from years three and four.
Cheddar, Axbridge and last year’s winner Draycott & Rodney Stoke First School all entered teams. Playing mini red tennis all competitors played one singles and one mixed doubles match against each of the other schools. Axbridge came out as resounding winners with 27 points ahead of Cheddar who were second with 18 points and Draycott & Rodney Stoke on 6 points. At the end of the event Axbridge were presented with the winners’ shield and all competitors received medals.
The teams from Axbridge and Cheddar First Schools were both invited to the county play-offs held at Taunton, at which Axbridge performed particularly well, being pipped to first place by a single point by Ash Primary School.
