Judy Murray, currently in Italy with a group of top Scottish juniors, continues her daily blog.
"Another great day at TC Parioli. I discovered that one of the coaches at the Tennis School here is Roberto Meneschincheri who Andy played in the first round at a Futures in Rome in August 2004. I remember it distinctly because Andy was 17 and Menschincheri was a 35 year old wild card with an unbelievable drop shot.
They played on the show court - a kind of sunken amphitheatre - at night and there was a crowd of about 300 which is quite something for a first round of a Futures! I was staggered that so many people had rocked up to watch a rather round and balding veteran play an unknown Scottish junior. But then I discovered that he was something of a local hero - an ex Italian Davis Cupper with incredible touch. Great entertainment.
The first set went to Andy on a tie break before the big guy ran out of puff. It was funny seeing him again 6 years later working at a kids day on the tennis school courts at the back of this amazing club.
There are 17 clay courts, 2 artificial grass courts, a 5 a side pitch, basketball court, swimming pool (empty right now), gym, snooker tables and a children’s play area as well as the bar, restaurant and pro shop. It’s easy to see why tennis thrives in Italy with clubs like these. It’s an all white rule for members which seems strange given that they play on clay which kills white clothing (especially socks) and the tennis school, 5 aside and kids area are at the far side of the clay courts - well away from the members area. Much like at the All England Club.
The 17 courts have been full every day and on Saturday the tennis school courts were mobbed with kids and parents. So much noise and activity, it was a real family atmosphere. Great weather helps this big time!
I forgot to tell you that at the Foro Italico there was a 100m wall with the following quote written on it "The English may have invented tennis but the Italians humanized it". Been trying to work that one out ever since.
Enough of that. Today was warm again till about 1730, then the rain started and hasn't stopped. We got an hour and a half training in the morning and again were lucky enough to get each player a 45 min practice set with a foreigner in the afternoon. Perfect.
Maia and Ross signed in for the main draw and I took a photo of them doing it - just in case we had any more problems. Not taking any chances after what happened on Friday.
Also got a snap with Anne Keothavong who was hitting with LTA coach Luke Milligan. She told us she had lost heavily in qualies at the WTA event but was still in doubles. She also told the kids that I had taken her (and Alex Bogdanovic) to a Tennis Europe 14u event in 1997. That's 13 years ago.........and prompted a "you must be really old now Judy". Cheers. I am.
So the draws out. The kids are in. Ross plays a LL and Maia's got an Italian wild card. Another Scot Natalie Syme arrived this afternoon with her mum - clearly brought the rain with them. She plays an Italian too.
We will go in early to sign for LL just in case there's a chance for Vincey or Anna to get in. You never know.
Arrivederci!"
