Brilliant sunshine was the order of the day for those present as Udny Lawn Tennis Club’s brand new courts were officially opened by Radio Scotland’s Mark Stephen and John Gheel from sportscotland at the Pitmedden facility’s Annual Open Day which dozens of players from as young as three upwards take to the courts.
Udny club president Sharon Jamieson was delighted with the turnout, “We were delighted that Mark and John were able to take part in our celebrations and even the weather was on our side! To actually have the new courts completed and ready for the community to use is the realization of a huge amount of hard work and effort from club members, while the £40,000 project would also not have been possible without the contributions from sportscotland, FSA, Aberdeenshire Council and Tennis Scotland, as well as donations from several local businesses and rotary clubs.”
Louise Martin CBE, Chair of sportscotland said: “sportscotland is delighted to have supported the upgrade of the courts at Udny Tennis Club with a Lottery investment of £20,000 from its Sports Facilities Fund Programme..“This investment demonstrates our commitment to enhancing sporting opportunities for local communities, by providing them with quality, accessible and well-designed facilities. The upgrade to the facilities at Udny will allow the club to increase its membership and provide a fantastic boost to tennis development in the Pitmedden area.”
A six week ling junior caching programme for juniors begins on Monday 25th May while adult coaching is now underway on Thursday nights. Anyone interested in information or for details about joining Udny should contact sheila.reid@tillyeve.co.uk
