A well known Scottish tennis coach who survived a battle with cancer is hosting a non-stop doubles match next week at David Lloyd Renfrew to raise money and awareness for three charities close to his heart.
Alan Liddell from Glasgow will hold ‘Alan’s Cancer Event’ on Tuesday (May 5) - his 57th birthday - and is hoping as many members of the public come along and take-part to raise money for three cancer charities.
In addition, tennis facilities at David Lloyd Edinburgh, Dean Lawn Tennis & Squash Club Edinburgh, Edinburgh Sports Club and Ladywell Community Tennis Club in Livingston will also be available throughout the day for those wishing to participate.
The event, which gets underway at 8 a.m. and will run until 10 p.m., will involve hour long doubles matches on six outdoor courts, with one person in each quartet being appointed captain and gathering the donations of each participant, hoped to be in the region of £100 per player, which will be donated to OCHRE, The Teenage Cancer Trust and the Maggie’s Centre. . The event is open to all ages and anyone who wishes to take part must come in a group of four people who will play continuous doubles for an hour, with David Lloyd and the other venues generously donating use of their facilities for the day. .
Alan said: “As a survivor of esophagus cancer, and fortunate to be alive, it has always been my aim to hold a Tennis Charity Day for the benefit of OCHRE (ochre.org), the Teenage Cancer Trust (teenagecancertrust.org) and The Maggie’s Centre (maggiescentres.org) to raise funds to fight this insidious disease among all age groups and to provide support and advice for carers and patients alike
“We hope to get as many people as possible along for a really fun day with a serious message. While the main focus is on David Lloyd Renfrew there is nothing stopping any four players playing anywhere for an hour to benefit these hugely worthwhile causes.”
During the day itself, there will be a number of surprise guests with the likes of Alan Rough, Jim Leishman and John Yorkston hoping to make it along while at 10 a.m. there will be an exhibition doubles match involving top Scottish players Ian Campbell, Jordan Gray and Malcolm Watt.
Alan Liddell is a former West of Scotland junior county captain and was a stalwart of the senior county team for many years, currently turning out for the West over 55’s.
