Maia Lumsden joined an illustrious list of top tennis players including Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Rafael Nadal and Britain’s Andy Murray as she won the 12U Open Super title in Auray, France over the weekend.
The 11 year-old from Glasgow, who was awarded the Highland Spring Hotshot award at the British Tennis Awards ceremony in December 2009, defeated Canadian Patricia Muamba 6-2, 6-2 to win the girls’ singles title in front of a capacity 1000 strong crowd.
After a solid week in which she earned straight sets victories over each of her four opponents en route to the final, Maia continued this form against Muamba.
Buoyed by the crowd she made a positive start to the match, settling into her rhythm and taking the first set 6-2. Maia continued to dominate proceedings in the second set, cleverly switching the pace to force her opponent in to a number of errors with her back hand slice.
The Briton served out the match at a set and 5-2 to secure victory as she returned to the event that she featured in twelve months prior.
“I was delighted with her performances,” said Under 12 girls age group Captain, John Trehearn. “I brought her a year young last year and the difference in twelve months has been terrific. She made the consolation final last year and really stepped up and implemented her game plan on this occasion.”
“It is probably the strongest 12 and under event on the calendar with all the best players featuring in this event so this is a very significant win for her.”
Maia, who came through qualifying and then won her main draw first round match at the AEGON Junior International Teen Tennis 14U Tennis Europe event in January, now plans to return to France over the coming weeks to compete in other 14U events to continue to challenge herself in a higher age category.
