The finals of the Scottish Indoor Open Championships at Scotstoun Leisure Centre saw Glasgow’s Jordan Gray and Edinburgh’s Mhairi Brown emerge victorious in the singles events.
In the men’s singles, Jordan Gray (Thorn Park) came through two tight three setters against Joe Gill of Stirling University in the quarter-final and Thistle’s Alan MacDonald in the semi-final. Gray was 4-1 down in the third against MacDonald before coming back to take the match, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. In the final Gray beat David Lloyd (Renfrew) coach Ian Samuels in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Brown (Dunfermline) won the ladies title defeating her doubles partner and winner of the 18 and under event, Emma Devine in the final, 6-3, 6-1. On route to picking up the trophy, Brown lost only 9 games in total in the 4 matches she played. In earlier rounds, 12 year old Millie Stretton (Barnton Park LTC) defeated number two seed, Stirling University student, Hannah Pickford.
In an excellent men’s doubles draw, last year’s winners Robert Dalgetty and Mike Cohen (both Esporta Hamilton) lost out to number 1 seeds, Alan MacDonald and Steven McGuckin (Thistle) in the final, 6-4, 7-6 (0). MacDonald and McGuckin had just squeezed past Stirling University coach Euan McGinn and his partner Ronnie Terras, 10-8, in the deciding match tiebreak in their semi-final.
Brown ‘did the double’ by winning the doubles event with Devine beating Robert Gordon University student Claire Birnie and Montrose’s Kirsty Mcrae, 6-2, 6-1.
