Tennis Scotland has today published its 2011 Annual Report.
On the back of world class performances across all age groups, membership has seen an increase of over 10% at registered places to play in the last 12 months.
Four Scots – Andy Murray, Elena Baltacha, Colin Fleming and Jamie Murray – finished the year inside the world top 50 with Andy, Elena and Colin also laying claim to the title of British number 1 in their respective rankings.
Fellow British number 1, Gordon Reid, currently sits at a career high 11 in the ITF Wheelchair Tennis rankings, looking in good shape as we head towards London 2012.
Once again, performances at both ends of the age spectrum were impressive, with numerous British and international titles recorded at junior and veteran age groups and a number of Scots represented Great Britain on the world stage.
All of Tennis Scotland’s ‘Measures of Success’ - British Tennis Members, Regularly Competing Juniors, Places to Play Membership and Clubmark – have shown an increase throughout 2011. Number of members of registered places to play now stands at an impressive 41,840, up 3,859 from 2010.
The Braehead Arena in Glasgow played host to two successful Davis Cup ties during 2011, and Leon Smith and the team are set to return to the same venue in February for a challenging match against Slovakia.
The report also gives an overview of Tennis Scotland’s accounts for the year ended 30th September 2011, as well as giving details of the governing body’s operational priorities for 2012.
David Marshall, Tennis Scotland’s Chief Executive Officer, commented: “2011 has been yet another stellar year for tennis in Scotland.
“Thanks to the hard work of our players, coaches, officials, volunteers and staff, along with the enthusiastic support of our key partners, we have once again raised the bar in terms of what can be achieved.
“Scottish players are making an ever increasing contribution towards the success of British Tennis in all its forms, whilst in Leon Smith and Judy Murray we proudly have the respective Davis and Fed Cup Captains.
“I spoke last year of how we had never had as many people playing the game in Scotland. Well I am delighted to report that once again there has been a significant growth in competition and participation rates and we have a number of initiatives planned for 2012 to keep this trend going.
“It is an exciting time to be involved in sport, with not just one, but two, major games on the horizon and I am confident that tennis is in a good place to continue to grow moving forward.”
