BRITISH No.1 Elena Baltacha justified her top seeding as she saw off American Carly Gullickson in straight sets to secure the AEGON Trophy in Nottingham.

The 26-year-old Scot triumphed 6-2, 6-2 against the 23-year-old from Cincinnati to get her grass-court season off to a fine start at the Nottingham Tennis Centre.

The men's singles final was contested between unseeded pair Ricardas Berankis, of Lithuania, and Go Soeda from Japan.

Currently at No.188 in the world, Berankis who celebrates his 20th birthday in a fortnight, showed just why he is considered a big hope for the future as he triumphed 6-4, 6-4 over the world No.137 Soeda to seal his first senior tournament win at this level.

Sarah Borwell and her partner Raquel Kops-Jones who were crowned ladies' doubles champions and top seeds Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski won the men's doubles title to make it a hat-trick of titles for British players at the tournament.
