The LTA president, Peter Bretherton, was wowed by Newcastle City’s Tennis Programme, particularly the Walbottle Campus site in the west of Newcastle.
The programme is headed up by Brandon Gilhooley and by working with his team of coaches and Karen Johns (Aura) he has started to develop a tennis programme that is looking to grow British Tennis for people of all ages and abilities. This includes tennis coaching on a Saturday morning and the exciting new product of Cardio Tennis. Cardio Tennis is the ‘Zumba’ of tennis whereby the main focus is on fun and fitness. The sessions are run by LTA licensed coach Carl Brough who has been putting in a tremendous amount of work to get the people of Walbottle involved in tennis.
This hard work by the council, school and tennis coach has seen the city programme be awarded Beacon status. Beacon status highlights that the programme offer free and affordable tennis for the whole community and we are sure that with continued dedication and commitment Newcastle City Tennis Programme will continue to grow.
Peter was thrilled with his visit and said “Today’s visit was fantastic and I will never forget the young people who were playing tennis on the school courts in their break time. I wish them every success in the future.”
