British doubles No.1 Sarah Borwell, and her partner Raquel Kops-Jones of the USA, scored their biggest win as a partnership in the opening round of the $4.5m BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
They beat the world No.3 singles players Caroline Wozniacki and her partner Anabel Medina Garrigues, the former world No. 3 in doubles.
The match went the distance before Borwell and Kops-Jones triumphed 7-6, 4-6, 10-2.
“That was probably our best win as a team." said Borwell after the match.
"We’ve been working really hard towards results like this and we deserved the win with all the travel we’ve put in the last few months. Hopefully it will give is the confidence to move onwards and upwards."
The pair will now face the Chinese outfit of Yung-Jan Chan and world doubles No. 3 Jie Zheng, who put out the No. 7 seeds in the first round in a 6-3 6-3 victory. Borwell continued,
"We’re definitely looking forward to playing Chan and Zheng in the next round. These tournaments are just below grand slam level so to be able to get into a tournament of this stature in the first place and then to get a result like this shows that we’re heading in the right direction.”
