Cumbria ladies fought hard in Glasgow at the AEGON Winter County Cup at Scotstoun leisure centre in Glasgow 27-29 November. The team included Dena Daly, Chris Wood, Tracey Breese, Joanne Cain, Caroline Clutterbuck and Jenna Blenkharn. With only 6 players travelling due to one of the players pulling out due to illness the ladies knew they would have their work cut out.
The first day saw Cumbria face Bedfordshire. They put up a good fight with Jenna Blenkharn playing some great battling tennis. Caroline Clutterbuck was a set down and missed her opportunity to take the second set with some set points. Joanne Cain took her opponent to 3 sets but finally lost. Dena Daly was the star of the day winning her singles 6-3, 6-2. She then went on to win her doubles as well with Chris Wood. Caroline Clutterbuck and Jenna Blenkharn paired up to play doubles and were very close to winning after saving 2 match points in the match tie break but then losing a match point of their own only to lose. This meant that the day finished at 2-7 overall.
Day 2 saw the ladies play the Channel Islands. This was to prove to be the toughest day. Dena Daly was very strong in her victory over her opponent this time winning 6-2, 6-0. Joanne Cain had some very long rallies in her match in which she took her opponent to 3 sets but didn't come out victorious. Tracey Breese and Joanne Cain played some great tennis taking the opposition to a match tie break but were unfortunate losers. The day finished 1-8.
The third and final day was against a familiar side from the Isle of Man. With hopes high of a possible victory they struggled at the start with 3 losses in the singles. Dena Daly showed her strengths in a comfortable victory again 6-1, 6-0. Tracey Breese fought hard in her singles determined not to be beaten and came out victorious over 3 sets. With all to play for in the doubles Chris Wood and Dena Daly proved again a strong pairing winning 6-2, 6-2. Wood played some great pick ups and Daly some fantastic smashes. Breese and Cain played really well, winning on a match tie break. Clutterbuck and Blenkharn were unlucky to lose their match playing against 2 fresh players. This nailbiting finish unfortunately went to the Isle of Man 4-5.
Overall Captain Caroline Clutterbuck expressed,"Once again the ladies battled hard over the weekend and we were unlucky to have narrowly lost on Sunday agains the Isle of Man. However we had an enjoyable weekend overall".
