The 3E Security County Closed Junior Tennis Championships finished indoors at Hills Road on Friday with three players each winning three titles. With the inclement weather all week the majority of matches were played indoors. The finals produced some exciting and high quality tennis from the age of 8 and under through to 18 and under.
The two 18 and under finals were very well contested and both were close affairs. In the boys 18 and under final Sam Fleck was pushed very closely by his younger opponent Will Huyton from Stamford. This match produced some excellent tennis and very exciting points. The first set went with serve and at 3 games a piece Will was 40-15 up on Sam’s serve and had two chances to break but the experience and calmness of Sam ensured he held serve and then went 40 – 0 up in the following game and despite Will getting back to deuce Sam then secured the next two points to break serve and then serve out the set for 6-3. In the second set the standard of tennis was even better with Will getting a break at 2-1 and then getting into a 5-2 lead only for Sam to draw on his experience and break Will at 3-5 down. At 4-5 down Will had a set point on the Fleck serve and narrowly missed a backhand down the line. Fleck was back in the match which then went to a tie break which Fleck took by 7 points to 2 to secure a 6-3, 7-6 win.
In the girls 18 and under singles final Alice McGee played very well to take the first set 6-4 but Victoria Nicholas fought her way back with some good serve and volleying and net play to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-1.
Will Huyton had earlier in the day beaten his team mate from Peterborough Jack Thorndike in another well contested final in the boys 16 and under event. With some solid hard hitting ground strokes Will came through 6-2, 7-6.
Will Huyton paired up with James Morris to take the 18 and under boys doubles final beating Jack Thorndike and Alex Davidson 6-2, 6-4.
Vicky Nicholas teamed up with Alice McGee to take the 18 and under girls doubles final and then she and Will Huyton took the final match of the day the 18 and under mixed doubles title against James Morris and Olivia Disley-Stevens by 6-2, 6-1.
In the younger age groups Eilish Mackie of Huntingdon won the 16 and under girls singles beating the vastly improved Alice Taylor 6-3, 6-3. Eilish then played Cambridge’s Stella Gordon in the 14 and under final and won 6- 2, 6- 4. Eilish then paired up with Tom Hands from Fulbourn to win the mixed final 6 – 0, 6 – 4.
In the boys 14 and under final Cambridge’s Kian Ahyaee beat Tom Hands 6–2, 6–2. Kian had played very solidly all week and was too consistent for his opponents.
In the boys 12 and under final the ever improving Dominic Lea beat Gransden’s John Taylor 6–0, 6-1. This made up for Lea’s final loss in the Donarbon final. Lizzie Pam from Peterborough won the 12 and under girls final.
In the even younger age groups the very promising Alex Wardley took the 10 and under title beating Sam Clark in the final while the girls final was contested with two equally promising players Kira Reuter and Aisha Brown with the more powerful Kira winning this.
The 9 and under mixed singles event saw Charlie Taylor beat Harry Wendelken – again both showing some exciting talent.
Not to be out done the mini red mixed singles saw James Murphy defeat Nik Ahyaee in the final and then two exciting prospects both 6 years old contested the third and fourth place play off with Zac Cox just beating Puneet Sunner – all names to watch out for in the future.
Referee Sue Rich said ‘despite the numbers for the event being down on previous years there was some excellent tennis played during the week and some well contested finals’. Pride of place goes to Willl Huyton Victoria Nicholas and Eilish Mackie for each winning three titles but look out for the younger players in the future!
