Sam Querrey and Andy Roddick take centre stage at the AEGON International on Tuesday in an all-American opening round encounter.
Centre Court at the AEGON International has seen some great matches in its time; the final between Pete Sampras and Gilad Bloom in 1990, Daniela Hantuchova ending Venus Williams’ comeback at the quarter-final stages in 2011 and not forgetting the Legends match between Greg Rusedski and Mark Philippoussis just last Sunday.
So while the battle on the grass at Devonshire Park between big-serving Sam Querrey and wild card Andy Roddick has a lot to live up to, it certainly has the makings of a memorable match. 29-year-old Roddick leads Querrey, the world No.63, 5-2 in their head to heads. Their last meeting was back in 2010 in Basel where Roddick prevailed in two close sets.
However the pair have never played against each other on grass and 24-year-old Querrey, who measures in at 6’6” is coming fresh from a semi-final performance at the AEGON Championships while world No.33 Roddick, who was seeded seventh at The Queen’s Club, suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
Play starts at 11am on Tuesday at the AEGON International and sees a stellar line-up with reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova taking on 2010 Eastbourne champion Ekaterina Makarova first up on centre court at 11am.
Former world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki takes on Christina McHale second on centre court before the big-serving all-American clash and top seed Agnieszka Radwanska will face Tsvetana Pironkova second on Court 1, defending champion Marion Bartoli will take on Sorana Cirstea third on Court .
Elsewhere, wild card Heather Watson will face qualifier Greta Arn of Hungary and third seeded Brits Colin Fleming & Ross Hutchins take on Paul Hanley & Julian Knowle.
