Devonshire Park, Eastbourne: 16th - 23rd June 2012
The USA ended day one of the Maureen Connolly Challenge Trophy with a 4-2 lead over Great Britain after the four singles and two doubles matches and subsequently won the trophy when the remaining matches were cancelled.
The Americans took the singles rubbers 3-1 and the doubles was split at 1-1 to give the end score of 4-2 after the first day of the two day event.
Victoria Duval got Team USA off to a great start as she defeated Katy Dunne 6-3, 6-1, before Madison Keys recovered from a break down in the first set to beat Lucy Brown 7-5, 6-1.
In the following singles rubbers Krista Hardebeck continued the trend as she also came back from an early break to see off Daneika Borthwick 6-3, 6-2.
However Fran Stephenson gave the British team a boost with a strong comeback to see off Grace Min, the world junior No.27, in a 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-4 victory.
The doubles rubbers were then played in extremely windy conditions down on the South coast and Keys & Min teamed up to see off Borthwick & Dunne 6-2, 6-4.
However in the final match of the day Brown & Stephenson produced a great performance to earn GB a much needed point as they won 6-4, 6-4 in their doubles match against Duval & Hardebeck.
