The AEGON GB Fed Cup Team have defeated the Netherlands 2-1 in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Euro/Africa Zone Group I competition.
In the first match of the match Bibiane Schoofs of Netherlands beat Anne Keothavong 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3 before British No.1 Elena Baltacha brought Great Britain level in the contest with victory over Michaella Krajicek 6-3, 6-3.
The all important doubles rubber would decide the outcome of the match and it was the young British pairing of Laura Robson and Heather Watson who prevailed, beating Kiki Bertens and Bibiane Schoofs 7-5, 7-6(5) to give Great Britain their second success in as many matches in Israel.
Elena Baltacha said: “I was very pleased with today for a number of reasons. Firstly because it got us back into the match to make it 1-1, and of course for me personally it was a really good win, it was a really big win, and I played well so it was very satisfying.
"Today was also a result of all the work that the team have put in behind the scenes. All the analysis that Judy has been helping us with has helped enormously. We’ve been able to see where our opponents weaknesses are, where their strengths are and it gave me a lot of confidence going into the match. And as for the overall team win, well, what can I say? I’m so proud of our team. The girls all did brilliantly and we’re just so excited.”
Heather Watson said: “We feel awesome right now. We fought the whole match from beginning to end. We got pumped from the start as we knew it was going to be tough and, you know, this is what it’s all about, these exciting moments and coming through them, and I think we did really well and won the important points. I think we played really well today but I do think we can play even better."
Laura Robson added: “I think going into it I started off a little bit nervous and it took us a few games to get into the match, but then afterwards we were breaking them quite regularly and were holding serve. Then in the second set we lost serve at 3-2 so we really had to fight but we went on to play a good tie break. I was so nervous at the end!”
AEGON GB Fed Cup Captain Judy Murray commented: “I am absolutely delighted and very very proud of them. It was a fantastic day. It was a tough match for Anne first up. It was very windy, and very tricky against an opponent who was playing very well.
"She was very close and there wasn’t very much in that one at all, and going into the second singles one down, Bally really rose to the occasion. She is a true number one. She knew she had to go out and get the job done and she just went out and blitzed it. Tactically perfect and she fought her heart out which she always does.
"And then, our ‘pièce de résistance’, our kids, straight in there against an experienced Dutch pair who play very good doubles and they whooped them. They came from behind in both sets and I’m absolutely delighted.”
The GB team will face Israel in tomorrow’s third and final group match at 2pm GMT. Follow the action with live score updates on twitter @Britishtennis.
