Davis Cup by BNP Paribas
Euro/Africa Zone Group I
Round One, February 2013
Welcome to the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Euro/Africa Zone Group I first round tie between the AEGON GB Davis Cup Team and Slovak Republic at Braehead Arena, Glasgow.
Great Britain gained promotion to Europe/Africa Zone Group I after beating Hungary 5-0 in the Group II third round play-off in September 2011 whilst Slovak Republic's last tie brought a 4-1 victory over Ukraine in the Group 1 relegation play-off.
The last time the two teams met in 1995, Slovak Republic were the victors. Bill Knight's team of Neil Broad, Tim Henman and Miles Maclagan lost 5-0 on foreign soil in Bratislava.
This will be Great Britain's 234th tie, in which Leon Smith's team will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to five successive wins and progress into round two of Euro/Africa Group I where they would face Belgium.

Quick facts
Background
Since taking over the captaincy in 2010, Leon Smith has led the AEGON GB Davis Cup Team to four successive victories, including a 5-0 win over Turkey in his debut tie at Eastbourne.
There followed victories over Tunisia at Bolton Arena and Luxembourg at the Braehead Arena before the most recent success, a 5-0 victory over Hungary in the Europe/Africa Zone Group II promotion play-off.
Ahead of the tie Smith commented: “This is a real step up in standard for the team, and we go into the tie knowing the Slovak Republic will be favourites. But I am confident the boys will see this as a great chance to put everything into representing their country, and that with the backing of a fantastic set of home fans, we can upset the odds.”
