Tomas Berdych beat David Ferrer and Novak Djokovic lost to Janko Tipsarevic to complete the semi-final line up at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Friday.
World No.1 Djokovic lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to Tipsarevic in the afternoon session before Berdych downed Ferrer 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 to top the group on Friday evening.
In the all Serbian battle it looked like Djokovic had put his defeat to Ferrer behind him as he started the brighter against his compatriot.
However Tipsarevic raced back into the match, taking the second and third sets by the same scoreline to complete his first win over Djokovic in 2011.
"I'm giving credit to me because I managed to beat the world No. 1," said Tipsarevic afterwards. "[He was] maybe not at his best day, but still I feel that's a victory that no one can take away from me."
Djokovic said: "He deserved to win. He was the better player in the second part of the match. It's never easy to perform against somebody you know very well. Regardless who is across the net, obviously you want to win. That was the case today. But it wasn't meant to be."
The defeat for Djokovic meant that Berdych only had to beat Ferrer to qualify for the semi-finals, and after doing so in three sets the Czech world No.7 won the group.
In the first set it was Ferrer who continued his form, winning it 6-3, before going on to lead 4-3, 40-15, in the second set.
However Berdych then found his form, rebounding to take the second 7-5, before racing away with the decider 6-1.
"The turning point, was when I made the set point and won the second set," said the Czech afterwards. "Because all the time before I was down, you know, coming up. When I made the second set, it just gives me a lot of confidence, energy."
David Ferrer said afterwards: "I think I was playing good the first set, and the middle of the second but then in the second and third, I serve very bad and I play very short my shots. In the third set, he was playing with more confidence. When it's not working, my serve, it's very difficult to beat the top players."
In the semi-finals on Saturday Roger Federer will meet Ferrer in the afternoon session whilst Jo-Wilfried Tsonga takes on Tomas Berdych in the evening session.
In the doubles on Friday there were wins for Melzer & Petzschner and Bhupathi & Paes to complete the semi-final line up.
On Saturday afternoon third seeds Mirnyi & Nestor will play the Bryans brothers before Bhupathi & Paes take on Fyrstenberg & Matkowski in the evening session.
