Aegon GB Pro-Series
January - November 2014
David Rice by James Jordan Photography
All seven remaining seeds progressed through to the quarter-final at Aegon GB Pro-Series Tipton on Wednesday, with top seed David Rice pushed all the way by Italian Lorenzo Frigerio.
Rice, who has recently entered the top 300 for the first time, had to come through two tie-breaks for a place in the last eight. Rice now has the unexpected bonus of a day off from singles, after Tom Farquharson unfortunately had to withdraw through injury, having beaten Toby Martin.
No.8 seed Neil Pauffley looked very impressive when defeating Josh Ward-Hibbert, as did No.2 seed Marcus Willis in his defeat of the dangerous Rob Carter.
George Coupland’s defeat by Belgian Julien Cagnina was the longest match of the day. Like David Rice on the adjourning court, tie-breaks were predominant, with Cagnina snatching the opening set 7-6(4), only to be pegged back by the big serving Coupland who levelled the match after capturing the second set 6-2. With nothing between the pair, the final set went to a tie-break, where the Belgian took complete control and the match 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(0).
Big serving Luca Vanni, and Sam Barry, together with German Tom Schonenberg, complete the quartet of overseas player’s through to the last eight, with Barry opening against Neil Pauffley and Cagnina against Marcus Willis at 10.30am on Thursday.
Entry is free to spectators.
